Frank the FEWLR Fanatic spends a lot of time thinking about heating oil, so you don’t have to! (And yes, Frank is a real member of the FEWLR team, not some made up heating oil mascot.)
Here’s Frank’s first tip:
Don’t play chicken with your oil gauge.
When the temperature drops, people burn more oil and more homeowners order at the same time. That means FEWLR’s network of heating oil suppliers get busier, delivery times are longer, and waiting until the last minute can leave you with a higher price.
Then there’s the bigger headache: actually running out of oil. An empty tank doesn’t just mean a cold house.
When an oil system runs dry, air can get into the fuel line, and your burner may need to be primed and restarted before your heat comes back on. That can mean an extra service call and extra cost, and if your house is without heat during a serious cold snap, frozen pipes can turn an annoying mistake into a much more expensive one.
Don’t just take our word for it: the U.S. Energy Information Administration expects heating oil prices to average about 30% higher this winter than last, with the average heating oil household spending about 21% more for the season. EIA also says distillate markets remain tight heading into winter. So, if your tank is already getting low, there’s a pretty good case for ordering before colder weather brings heavier demand and busier delivery schedules.
So, Frank’s advice is pretty simple: if your gauge is getting low, don’t wait for the first brutally cold day to do something about it.
Open the FEWLR app now, choose how much oil you need and when you want it delivered by, and let our network of local heating oil companies bid on your order. You’ll beat the cold weather rush, give yourself more breathing room, and get a better price.
